Finding the Right Roommates for Off-Campus Housing at Purdue

Roommate compatibility matters more than almost any other factor in off-campus housing. A good roommate turns your apartment into a home. A bad one turns it into a place you avoid. Here’s an honest guide to picking roommates for off-campus housing near Purdue, and what to do if the situation doesn’t work.

Friends aren’t automatically good roommates

The most common mistake first-time off-campus renters make is assuming that anyone they get along with will be a good roommate. Being friends with someone at the dining hall is different from sharing a bathroom, kitchen, and monthly rent bill with them. Some of the closest friends make the worst roommates. Some casual acquaintances make the best ones.

Look for compatibility, not chemistry. The two are different.

The five conversations to have before signing

Before you sign a lease with anyone, actually talk through these five things. If any of these feel awkward now, they’ll be much worse in month four.

Sleep and study schedule. What time do you go to bed on a Tuesday? When do you need quiet? Do you study at home or on campus? Someone who thrives at 2 a.m. and someone who’s asleep by 11 will clash constantly unless the space is designed for it.

Cleanliness standards. How often do dishes need to be done? Is a sink of dirty plates okay for a day, or two days, or never? Vacuuming, weekly or biweekly or “when it looks bad”? These sound trivial. They aren’t.

Guests and partners. How often can friends come over? What about romantic partners spending the night? Weekly, monthly, or open door? Everyone has different comfort levels, and unspoken expectations create resentment fast.

Shared costs. Utilities, streaming subscriptions, cleaning supplies, toilet paper. How are you splitting them? Are you okay fronting money and getting paid back, or does everything go through Venmo the day it’s spent?

Financial reliability. Awkward but essential. Can everyone actually afford this? What happens if someone’s rent is late one month? This is the conversation nobody wants to have, and the one that causes the most lease disputes.

Understand how the lease works

Many student housing communities near Purdue price by the bed, not by the unit. That means each roommate signs an individual lease. If someone flakes, you’re not on the hook for their rent, but you also don’t get to choose the replacement.

When you don’t have roommates lined up

If you’re moving to Purdue from out of state or you don’t know anyone at your school yet, roommate-matching programs are a legitimate option. Some student housing communities offer them. So does Purdue’s off-campus housing office. Facebook groups for Purdue students are another common route.

If you go this route, still have the five conversations. A short call or coffee meeting before signing is worth it every time.

What to do if it isn’t working

Sometimes roommate situations don’t work out, even after honest conversations. When that happens, address it early. A quick, direct conversation in month one is much easier than an accumulated year of resentment.

Most disputes come down to unmet expectations — someone assumed something the other didn’t. Naming the specific behavior (“the sink piles up”) is more productive than framing it as a character flaw (“you’re messy”). Where reasonable compromise isn’t possible, most leases have provisions for roommate replacement.

Setting the year up right

The best off-campus years happen when roommates set expectations upfront, revisit them if something shifts, and treat the apartment like a shared responsibility rather than a shared space they happen to occupy. It sounds obvious. It works.
