What Amenities Actually Matter for Student Housing at Purdue

Every student housing tour ends the same way: a leasing agent lists a dozen amenities and asks what you think. Some of those amenities will genuinely change how you live. Others sound impressive in a brochure and get forgotten by October. Here’s an honest look at which amenities matter for Purdue students living off-campus, and which are worth skipping.

The amenities that show up in your weekly routine

Some amenities become part of your life whether you plan on it or not. These are the ones worth prioritizing.

A fitness center that isn’t a token gesture. Look for free weights, functional training space, and equipment that gets maintained. A good on-site gym saves you the CoRec walk and a membership fee elsewhere.

Reliable Wi-Fi and study space. This is the single most under-appreciated amenity in student housing. Ask about the provider, the actual speeds, and whether there’s a shared study lounge for group projects. Your bedroom desk works for solo studying; group projects need somewhere else.

In-unit laundry. Non-negotiable for most students. A shared laundry room in an Indiana winter is not fun.

Package management. Between textbooks, Amazon, and grocery deliveries, packages are a real logistics problem. Secure lockers or a staffed lobby beats a pile of boxes in the hallway every time.

The amenities that are worth it if they match your life

Pet-friendly policies and pet spa/wash stations. If you have a dog, transformative. If not, irrelevant.

Covered parking. Not free at every building, but worth it if you have a car — especially in winter.

Furnished units. Great for a one-year lease. Usually not worth the premium for a longer stay.

Guest suites. Useful if your family visits often. Otherwise, they’re something you noticed on the tour and never used.

EV charging. Increasingly relevant, especially for newer buildings.

The amenities that photograph better than they live

Rooftop pools and lounges. Wonderful three or four months a year in Indiana. Worth touring, worth having, but don’t let one drive a lease decision on its own.

Golf simulators. Great once. Ask when you can actually reserve one on a Saturday.

Coffee bars and juice bars. Fun the first week. Usually get replaced by whichever café is on your route to class.

Single-purpose specialty rooms. Ask how often they’re actually booked before assuming you’ll use them weekly.

Amenities specific to student life that get overlooked

A few amenities matter more for students than they do for other renters, and they rarely make the top of the brochure.

Community events. Student housing communities that host regular events (game nights, cookouts, exam-week study snacks) make it much easier to meet people outside your major. Ask what the resident calendar actually looks like.

Maintenance response time. When your AC breaks in September, you want to know it’ll be fixed in 24 hours, not five days. Ask how quickly work orders get resolved.

Lease flexibility. Some student housing communities offer academic-year leases (10 months) alongside 12-month options. That flexibility can save real money if you’re going home for the summer.

How to evaluate amenities on a tour

The most useful thing you can do on a tour is ask the leasing team, “What do your residents actually use?” A good leasing team answers honestly. A less-good one lists everything on the amenity sheet.

Also worth asking how busy the gym gets at 6 p.m., whether the study lounge is quiet during finals, whether maintenance requests actually get resolved in a day, and what events residents show up to.

Our FAQs page covers a lot of the practical questions that come up on tours.

Seeing it in person

Photos of amenities don’t tell you what they feel like to actually live with. If you’re weighing student housing options near Purdue, the best way to know what works for you is to walk through it. Browse our floor plans, take a look at the gallery, or schedule a tour.
