Where to live near Purdue: a neighborhood guide to West Lafayette

June 16, 2026

Hey Boilermakers. Figuring out where to live near Purdue isn’t just about finding an apartment. It’s about picking the part of West Lafayette that fits your routine. The campus is compact, but the areas around it feel pretty different from one another. Here’s a quick map of the main ones.

The Village and Chauncey Hill

This is the heart of student life, right up against campus near State Street and Chauncey Avenue. You’re walking distance to class, food, and most of the social scene. It’s the most convenient option if you want to roll out of bed and be in a lecture hall ten minutes later. The tradeoff is that it’s the busiest part of town, which some people love and others find a little much.

Downtown West Lafayette and the State Street corridor

State Street got a major redesign a few years back, and the corridor running through West Lafayette is now more walkable and bus-friendly than it used to be. Living along here gives you a balance of being close to campus without being in the densest pocket of it. It’s a solid middle ground for students who want quick access but a little more breathing room.

The Levee

The Levee sits along the Wabash River between West Lafayette and downtown Lafayette. It’s a short trip to campus and puts you near shops and restaurants, with a slightly more settled feel than the core student areas. If you want to be close but not surrounded, this stretch is worth a look.

Across the river in Lafayette

Cross the Wabash and you’re in Lafayette proper, which is generally a bit more affordable and has its own walkable downtown. The catch is the commute. You’ll want to be honest about how you’re getting to campus, whether that’s the bus, a bike, or a car, before you commit to living on this side. For some students the savings are worth it. For others, the daily crossing gets old.

How to choose

Start with your commute, since that’s the thing you’ll deal with every single day. Then layer in budget, whether you want to be in the middle of everything or just near it, and how the bus routes line up with your class schedule. West Lafayette is small enough that no choice is really wrong. It’s just about matching the area to how you actually live.
